The Leader People Trust

OBJECTIVE

How do you become a leader that other people can trust? In this training we explore the crucial role of trust in leadership. Drawing on Jesus’ example from John 10, we see that people trust leaders with integrity, competence, and proven experience but also is fully for them. By living these qualities, leaders can build strong relationships and empower others to flourish in their God-given purpose. This model of Jesus's leadership builds trust so that others will follow.

Overview

  • Trust is essential for ministry leadership.
  • John 10 uses the shepherd analogy to illustrate trustworthy leadership.
  • Four characteristics of a trustworthy leader:
    • Understands their people (knows them by name, speaks identity over them, is knowable).
    • Is fully for them (leads to abundant life, prioritizes their needs, empowers them).
    • Is good (demonstrates integrity, aligns words, actions, and beliefs).
    • Has selfless power/authority (uses power to serve, not to control).
  • Be to others what Jesus was to his disciples.

Questions

  1. Think about a leader you trust. Which of these qualities do they demonstrate?
  2. Reflect on your own leadership. In which of the four areas (understanding, being for, goodness, selfless power) do you feel strongest? Where do you need to grow?
  3. How can you practically demonstrate that you are "fully for" your team?
  4. What steps can you take to ensure alignment between your words, actions, and beliefs, thus strengthening your integrity?
